Monopoly Party is by far the best Monopoly video game to date. Obviously. I rented it saying to myself "Well, Monopoly's fun, maybe this will be good to pass a few hours." My expectations were met, and exceeded. Monopoly is a board game in which you compete against other players to acquire the properties littered around the board, get lots of cash, and make your rivals bankrupt. It goes without saying, but the last person to be not bankrupt wins the game. Now that the basics are covered, on to the review! Gameplay - If you've ever played Monopoly the board game, or any of it's hundreds of versions, you probably know what you're doing. Although (I think) board Monopoly has up to 8 players, MP is limited to 4. That's not so bad, but they removed some of the pieces. Anyway, there are two modes to choose from, Party mode and Classic mode. Classic mode is pretty much your standard board game, 1 player rolls at a time, and so forth. Party mode on the other hand, has some more to offer, the most obvious being the ability to have all 2-4 players playing at the same time, making the game pass ever so much faster. And that can mean a lot, because Monopoly can take a LONG time to play. Another added bonus is that you can choose from theme boards including Classic, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Prehistoric, and Ancient Monuments. Each has it's own unique pieces, houses, and hotels. You can also set the type of currency, and on the Classic board, the language. You play the game by rolling the dice, moving on the board, buying properties, participating in auctions, and wheeling and dealing with other players. I give it a 10/10. Story - Umm.. No story here. I guess it gets a 0/10, but it won't count towards the final score, because board games aren't supposed to have stories. Graphics - Well, I'll admit they're not all that great, but if you're playing Party mode then it'll be so zoomed out that you won't be able to tell. On the flip side, the board looks great (of course! It's a big square!) and Mr. Monopoly was done pretty good. Plus, the frame rate never suffers, obviously. The pieces, aside from the Classic ones, could be a little better done, they seemed kind of blocky to me. The theme boards themselves look pretty good I'd say, and the dice look like dice, so you'd have to be real picky to have a big problem with the graphics. 9/10 for the graphical department. Sound - Seeing as the background music is initially almost inaudible, it doesn't really make a big impression on the game. Some of the tracks are good, and will stick in your head if you turn the volume up, but others are rather repetitive and annoying. Likewise, Mr. Monopolys voice is pretty good, and lets you know what's going on, but it gets annoying after about half an hour. Another problem with that is that he's trying to keep track of what's happening to every player at the same time (in Party mode anyway) and will just randomly say what's happening to any one of the player on the board. It's not really a bad thing, but it annoyed me for some reason I can't explain. I think that an 8/10 is a fair rating. Replayability - If you've got friends who are over constantly or family members who enjoy playing with you, this game should last forever. However if you're alone, playing against the AI will get boring eventually, just like any other game. How long that takes will differ from individual to individual, but it should still last quite a while. There's also the fact that it's one of those games you can just pick up and play whenever. There's a built in save function so that if a game is taking too long you can come back and finish it later, which is very likely in the world of Monopoly. Definitely a 10/10 here. Final Score - 9/10 (not an average) Final Recommendation - Let's see, if you like Monopoly, buy it. If you love Monopoly, buy it. If you've never played Monopoly, rent it. And if you hate Monopoly, don't buy or rent it. Simple as that. You also might wanna hold off on the buying if you don't have people to play with.
